Dr. Cowan completed his doctoral training at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He also completed an APA-accredited internship in Behavioral Pediatrics at the Munroe-Meyer Institute for Genetics and Rehabilitation at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
In addition to part-time work at NEOBH, Dr. Cowan maintains a fulltime position as Assistant Professor of School Psychology at Kent State University. He additionally provides consultation and outreach services through a partnership with the Family Child Learning Center in Tallmadge, Ohio and the Autism Clinic at Akron Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Cowan specializes in assessment and treatment intervention related to autism spectrum disorders (ASD). His training and practice has included extensive involvement with individuals and families impacted by autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Cowan also specializes in providing assessment and intervention related to problematic behavior demonstrated by children across home and school settings. Consultation with parents and educators is a critical component of Dr. Cowan’s behaviorallyoriented intervention with children who demonstrate significant behavioral difficulties, including tantrums, physical aggression, and general noncompliance. Finally, Dr. Cowan also provides assessment and intervention related to depression demonstrated by adolescents, with an emphasis on Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment (CBT) approaches.
Dr. Cowan has presented a wide variety of community presentations. These presentations have included topics related to recommendations for parents of children with special needs, challenges encountered by siblings of children with special needs, and social skill intervention for special needs children. Dr. Cowan has additionally provided presentations directed toward parental involvement in the special education process, as well as parental involvement in social skills training.
