Penny Griffith, Ph.D.

Population Served:  Children, Adolescents, Adults, Hearing Impaired, All Disability Populations

Dr. Griffith is a Clinical Psychologist specializing in the treatment of children and adolescents. She is a professor of Special Education at Kent State University. Dr. Griffith provides diagnostic and treatment services for children and youth with a variety of disabilities and mental health issues. Prior to her work as a psychologist and college educator, Dr. Griffith was employed as a teacher and as a speech and language pathologist. Thus, she also brings this expertise to her practice of psychology.

Dr. Griffith has conducted and has published approximately 40 research studies related to communication disorders, deafness, family issues, and treatment approaches effective with children and adolescents diagnosed with Asperger’s Disorder. Dr. Griffith has over 30 years of experience in the field of disabilities, and utilizes her wide variety of skills in her work with clients at NEOBH.  She is considered an expert regarding work with clients that demonstrate diagnoses related to cognitive, sensory and learning disabilities that are combined with diagnosed mental health disorders.

Dr. Griffith has presented a number of national and community presentations, primarily devoted to topics related to special educational services. She has provided workshops to teachers, parents and other professionals regarding the transition needs of students with Asperger’s Disorder, and has spoken to educators regarding professional collaboration in special education. An additional area of interest for Dr. Griffith includes post secondary systems changes that are needed to accommodate students with disabilities.

Dr. Griffith’s skills in the area of assessment have made her a frequent source of consultation for parents concerned about the adequacy and implementation of Individualized Educational Plans (IEP) that have been developed for students with qualifying disabilities.
